Hole by Hole
HOLE # 1
 |
Anticipation 508 yards
Par 5 Bide-A-Wee beckons all with a friendly par 5 for starters. Although the
long hitters will have a chance to reach the green in two, bunkers guard the left side of
the driving area and a water hazard guards the right side. |
HOLE # 2
 |
The Tree 431 yards
Par 4 Stay left and avoid being blocked out by "The Tree". A medium
iron to a long narrow green take an extra club to a back hole location. |
HOLE # 3
 |
The Road Hole 393
yards Par 4 A gentle dogleg right offering a generous fairway---water hazard and
large sand bunker guard the difficult three level green. Take a par 4 and go directly to #
4. |
HOLE # 4
 |
Bunker 180 yards Par 3 A
large sand bunker on the left and grass bunker on the right guard a large two level green.
The tee shot is all carry and you need at least one extra club to reach a back hole
location. |
HOLE # 5
 |
George Bayer 607 yards Par 5 Named
after one of the longest hitter on the PGA Tour during Chandler Harper’s day, this is one of the
longest holes in Hampton Roads. It is a true three shot hole that cannot be reached in
two. Out of bounds guards the entire right side and a water hazard can cause problems in
the landing area of the second shot. |
HOLE # 6
 |
Strange Turn 427 yards Par 4 Certainly
not a breather, this long dogleg left requires an accurate long iron on the second shot
similar to the one that helped course design consultant Curtis Strange win back to back
United States Open Championships. The green is guarded by a grass bunker left and a sand
bunker right. Par will be an excellent score. |
HOLE # 7
 |
Loch McCoy 230 yards Par 3 No
bunkers, but plenty of length---water hazard on the right side and a long narrow green
make this hole tough. |
HOLE # 8
 |
Long and Tough 447 yards Par
4 The name says it all --- play over the waste area to the left side for a shorter
second shot that must carry water to a well bunkered green. |
HOLE # 9
 |
Little Recess 315 yards Par
4 After the last four holes, everyone will welcome this slight breather. A three wood
off the tee down the right side will leave a short iron to an elevated green almost
completely surrounded by a meandering sand bunker. Get a birdie and enjoy a hot dog and a
coke at the turn. |
HOLE # 10
 |
Between the Ponds 526 yards
Par 5 Play this as a true three-shot hole by playing safely between the ponds and you
will reward yourself with a birdie opportunity. |
HOLE # 11
 |
Tight 292 yards Par 4 Mind
the name and take a long iron for position off the tee. A short iron to a small undulating
green makes this hole a challenge. |
HOLE # 12
 |
Waterloo 190 yards Par 3 Dont
lose concentration with the spectacular view. A long to medium iron is needed, but play
smart and hit for the fat of the green without regard to the hole location. |
HOLE # 13
 |
Thread the Needle 448 yards
Par 4 Tough driving hole between fairway bunkers recess is definitely over. Long
iron needed to long narrow green. |
HOLE # 14
 |
Pinehurst 459 yards Par 4 Is
this Portsmouth or Pinehurst? Stay out of the pines by driving to the right center to
avoid large fairway bunker. A menacing grass bunker in front guards the kidney shaped
green. |
HOLE # 15
 |
Cozy 337 yards Par 4 Play
conservative with a fairway wood or long iron away from the waste area and water hazard on
the left side. A short iron to the small two-tiered green should offer a birdie
opportunity. |
HOLE # 16
 |
Scottish 205 yards Par 3 This
is a tough short hole with a large waste area guarding the left side. The tee shot is all
carry and the green offers a variety of chipping situations if you miss the green. |
HOLE # 17
 |
Westward Ho 552 yards Par 5 A
long three shot par 5 guarded by water and a small sand bunker in front of the horseshoe
shaped green, and cup location make this hole very interesting. Dont forget to look
at the spectacular view down the fairway before you leave the green. |
HOLE # 18
 |
Twin Oaks 393 yards Par 4 A
dogleg right requires a drive up the left side to avoid large grass bunker. The second
shot requires great accuracy to carry the water hazard to the two-tiered long narrow green
between the beautiful Twin Oaks. This beautiful finish will remind everyone of the great
day of golf just concluded. |
